It would be nice to have an other post on the bus from Chetumal and Cancun to Xcalak on this board as someone is always looking.
Thanks for your help. |

I wish I could be more helpful, but I can tell you the Ado buses are awesome. Be sure to take a jacket or something with you as they can get really cold!
We took the bus from Mahahual to Tulum in January (it was a 4:30 or 5:30 pm departure) and a piece of cake. It's next stop was Playa and then Cancun.
Also took the bus from Playa to Mahahual which ran over night, and I don't know if it continued to Xcalak.
It's hard for us to time a flight and bus from Cancun as we land around 5 and the bus does not run to Mahahual until close to midnite. So you can head into Playa, store your luggage in a locker and wander Playa for a while waiting for that midnite bus to come in.
The ado website, when it's working is pretty accurate. |

This is as close as I can get as of March 9th, 2009. Always subject to change:
ADO Mahahual to Cancun
There are 2 major places they pick up and drop off. One is behind the Hotel Mahahual which is one block in from the beach on the road parallel to the beach walkway. The other is at a little station that you will find by going left from the main road to Mahahual before you get to the right turn into the town of Mahahual and way before you get to the beach. It is on the road that leads to the little housing development. You can see it from the road on the left. It is a bumpy stone road with deviders in the middle. After a few short blocks you will see on your right the Encore cafe (which is great.) There are several businesses on both sides . Keep going a few more blocks.
On your left you will see a store on the corner called Aborrotes Don Jose. Next to it is the hotel Pasada de Puerto. Make a U turn right after that. Come back and on your right past the hotel and Aborrotes Don Jose turn right. There is a Mini Super on the left. It is the only building there. You will see the ADO sign.
I mention these spots cause sometimes folks get off at one stop and people are waiting to pick them up at the other.
Mahahual to Cancun 8:30am Monday - Saturday arrives around 12:30pm
Also one at 5:30pm getting in around 11:pm.
On Sunday one leaves at 12:30 pm arriving round 6pm and the 5:30pm getting in around 11pm.
(8:30 am doesn't run on sunday)
The ADO stops at Phillipe Carillo Puerto,Tulum and Playa del Carmen. I believe it will let you off at Puerto Adventures and I know it will let you off at the main entrance of the road to Puerto Morelas.. and then Cancun.
Cancun to Mahahual..7am from the main station one block from the Kin Mayob Hotel gets into Mahahual around 12:30.
You can also take the Carribe bus from Xcalak to Limones and then catch the Mayab bus going North. The Mayab buses run pretty often during the day. They have a stylised picture of a deer on the front
If you want to bus all the way to Xcalak from Cancun...here is what I suggest. ..Either take the Mayab out of the main station going south and get off at Limones. Be sure you are there in plenty of time to catch the Carribe. It is coming from Chetumal to limones and then will circle back and head down to Xcalak stopping in Mahahual and taking the beach road most of the way to Xcalak. You want to be in Limones no later then 5:30 even though you will have a bit of a wait cause you really don't want to miss it and get stuck in Limones unless you are up for a 500 peso cab ride. Another version of this trip is take a Collectivo (little white van) all the way to Tulum.(They don't usually go further south.)Get a Mayab bus from the Tulum bus station to Limones...Same thing, be sure you have plenty of time to get a bus at Tulum around 3 to get to Limones to be there around 5:30.
The Carribe bus leaves from Xcalak at 5 am. and 2 pm. It has no airconditioning so you might want to pick a seat near an open window or one that works. You will want to sit on the right side of the bus cause seeing the sunrise from the beach road is always quite lovely.
If you are going to Chetumal ...The Carribe goes to Limones so don't panic when it turns right at the highway. Then it does a U turn in Limones and heads south Chetumal. It gets there around 9.am It drops off at the downtown station near the museum and the open market and then goes to the main station
Chetumal to Xcalak. From the main station which is on Insurgentes the Carribe bus leaves around 4 o'clock. You don't buy a ticket. You pay when you get off at Xcalak. Do go down into the departure area and keep your eyes pealed for it to pull in. It also picks up in front of the Plaza America. There is a bench with a roof over it there in front of MacDonalds. Other Carribe buses go by but look for the one that says Xcalak on it. Stand and wave just to be safe. It can be there anytime between 4:15 and 5:30 which is another reason to get it from the main station. I have given up and walked away and it has flown by and I have waitied patiently and then had a little collectivo van drop people off where I am standing and the big bus not see me standing there and fly by!!!!!It leaves first from the downtown station but I have never taken it from there. My guess is leaving sometime around 3 or thereafter. It gets to Xcalak around 8:30 pm.
You can also take an ADO out of Mahahual to Chetumal Monday through Saturday 7:30am,1:00pm and 6:30.pm. On Sundays it goes at 10:30 1:00 and 6:30.
Oops. I forgot to mention there is also a late night bus out of Cancun that arrives in Mahahual before the sun comes up. I will get more details..It leaves Cancun at 11:30 pm and should take about 5 1/2 hours
but that doesn't explain why I saw an ADO coming toward Mahahual at 7 am. must research some more. |

As Peacequest said 'subject to change' guess what, it's changed.
I took my son to catch the Cancun ADO Bus on Tuesday 10th march, we went to buy his ticket at the MiniSuper that used to have the ADO sign on the front of the shop and were told they no longer sell tickets and the bus no longer stops there.
Actually it's nicer as you can sit at an outside table at cafe Aroma and drink wonderful cuppachinos or beer if thats your preference at 08.20 in the morning. cafe Aroma, first corner on the left as you drive into the Casita road, (or as Peacequest described it the little housing developement). Unless you go into Mahahual to the ADO Bus Station you just buy your ticket when you board.
Okay thats it for now, but as always, subject to change....... |

So the ADO stop is at the Aroma Cafe now? Groovy. I saw an ADO bus coming from Cancun into Mahahual this morning at 7 am. My guess is it is the on that leaves at night from Cancun but I will have to get the exact times. |

I don't think there is a designated stop at the Casita's at the moment,
but, my son got off the bus from Cancun at Cafe Aroma and 2 weeks later we waited there with other people who also wanted to catch the bus up to Cancun.
It's the nicest bus stop I have ever waited at! |

Went to catch the 08.30 ADO bus last Thursday 4th June and found a small notice in the Mahahual Bus Terminal that says No Buses from Mahahual to Cancun. Seems you have to catch the bus from Limones. It goes at 08.00 and 10.30am to Cancun. I used alternative transport. Report when back in Xcalak. I have yet to return. Polly |

Sunday October 4th. Went to Mahahual to catch the ADO to go north. Hand written sign. No buses on Sunday. Rest of the week 10:00am and 18:30.pm.
There was a Mayob coming through Limones around 1:30.
ADO's flew by in Limones but didn't stop. I guess they were expresses. |

This changes like the wind so maybe it's better to check for exact dates with this web site that I have just found.
